Pressing Matters: Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 1, 2013

Editing

  1. Made an offer on a new novel from a beloved Candlemark & Gleam author. As soon as the contract’s back, we’ll let you know what’s happening!
  2. Going through Editrix Sarah’s commentary on The Daughter Star and gearing up for lots of news regarding that novel…soon!
  3. We’ll have a number of other announcements soon, too – just have to clear up details and then we’re good to go!

Production

  1. Art Demigod Chris is sketching a lot of concepts for the cover of The Dominion, and all the ideas are amazing ones. It’s going to be hard to choose!
  2. Eleni Tsami sent us the final wraparound for The Other Half of the Sky. It actually looks even better than in this thumbnail! other_half_wraparound alt-sm
  3. Font work on the Daughter Star cover is continuing apace.
  4. Working through concepts for the new novel series hinted at in Item 1 of Editorial this week; hopefully we’ll have some comps to the author today!

Reviews, Promotions, and Buzz

  1. What are you doing on Monday, February 4? If you’re in the New York metro area, you should head to Rough & Ready to get a sneak peek at Blue Diamond Delivery by Anne E. Johnson!
  2. Pencil it in: Justin Robinson will be on hand at the Redondo Beach Mysterious Galaxy on Feb. 16 for their local authors meet-and-greet!
  3. We’ve just created a microsite for The Other Half of the Sky! Stop by for a preview of the stories, a look at the pre-publication buzz and reviews, and more.

Sundries

  1. Apparently, sending tea with royalties puts you in contention for Best Publisher Ever. It even beats out paying authors with ponies, it seems.
  2. Speaking of payments for writing, MediaBistro had an interesting post this week on the financial realities of being a genre novelist. Combined with some of the posts the fabulous Jim Hines has done in the past, it puts a lot of things in perspective for writers.
  3. 1099s are out! One more thing crossed off the accounting list…
  4. Still need to redo the sales database, though.
  5. And figure out why some cover images aren’t populating to WorldCat/OCLC. Librarians, can any of you give a hint?
  6. We just started a new occasional blog series to try to support both our authors and other people in the writing community, with looks at what happens after a book launches. Is there anything you’d particularly like to discuss, or have us comment on?
