Justin Robinson fans, rejoice! A new sibling is joining the City of Devils turbulent family (comprised so far by City of Devils, Fifty Feet of Trouble, Wolfman Confidential, and A Stitch in Crime). Whereas the first three works had as their narrator Nick Moss, the beleaguered but indomitable last human PI in Los Angeles, in the last offering we first heard a non-human’s voice: Jane Stitch, a determined meat golem, was searching to identify the people who literally made her, and calling her callous creator to account.
The second branch of the new thorn tree is Unwitch Hunt. Its protagonist is Hexene Candlemas, already a potent presence in City of Devils and Fifty Feet of Trouble. who was very much in Nick’s thoughts before circumstances made them drift apart. Here’s the riveting synopsis of Unwitch Hunt:
“Hexene Candlemas was part of the most powerful witch coven in Los Angeles. Then her toad died in a mad scientist’s stab at doomsday. Now she’s got nothing. In a last-ditch effort at regaining their powers, her coven journey to the one place that might have answers: La Ciudad de las Brujas. Founded by witches and run according to their ancient laws, Las Brujas is intended as a utopia. Hexene quickly learns that’s not the case as she finds herself facing down the city’s unofficial police force, a mad soft drink magnate, and a full-blown zombie rebellion. It’s not the City of Devils. It’s something worse.”
Unwitch Hunt will be unleashed around the Ides of March 2022. Keep your radios on at this frequency for more announcements to come. In the meantime, you can keep senses sharp and appetites whetted by checking out earlier installments of Justin’s monsterverse.
